What is wet waste
Wet waste, also known as food waste, organic waste, or perishable waste, refers to easily perishable biomass household waste such as ingredient waste, leftovers, expired food, melon rinds and kernels, flowers and greenery, and herbal medicine residues. Wet waste is waste generated from residents' daily lives and activities such as food processing, catering services and unit feeding, including discarded and unused vegetable leaves, leftovers, leftover rice, fruit peels, egg shells, tea dregs, bones, animal offal, fish scales, leaves and weeds, etc. Its main sources are household kitchens, restaurants, hotels, canteens, markets and other industries related to food processing.
The recycling value of wet waste
Waste is easily eroded, degradable and can be recycled for energy. It is more commonly used to make organic fertiliser, fuel oil, alcohol, activated carbon, furfural, erythropoietin, fetin, chemical paste, keratin and many more.Wet waste is so rich in organic matter that it is difficult to treat it properly using conventional landfill and incineration. Wet waste is susceptible to decay and sometimes contains pathogenic microorganisms, which can be harmful.Wet waste is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, so it can be composted at high temperatures to kill the pathogenic micro-organisms. It also kills pests and weed seeds, which allows the waste to decompose quickly and be used by plants. The plant seeds in the wet waste have been killed and will not produce any more crops. There are also waste materials from pulp and wood mills that can be used as fertiliser.Wet waste can also be recycled as fuel oil, as organic waste heats up quickly under high pressure and when it does, pyrolysis occurs and hydrogen is added to produce fuel oil. The calorific value of fuel oil is slightly lower, but it is still 75 per cent of that of oil.
